Some time ago, Adrian Vermeule graciously posed some questions concerning my treatment of sovereignty in Before Church and State. He got me thinking more deeply about sovereignty and its relationship to liberalism. The result is this article, “The End of Sovereignty,” which is in the current issue of Communio. It seems to me that many of the debates that postliberals are having converge on the question of “sovereignty.” Some of us think that the sovereign power of the state itself is fundamental to the problem. Others think that the problem is that the state’s power is misdirected. This is a very important debate, and I hope this article is a worthy contribution.
